CASE STUDY: CHESTER, NY
A Hibernating Bat Colony Behind the Ridge Board
A Chester homeowner called in January after finding a bat on the floor of a second-story hallway. In winter, bats hibernate but occasionally one will awaken when attic voids warm from home heating. These bats are hungry and have no food to eat outside, so they will at times follow the warm airflow into the living space in search of bugs. We captured the bat for rabies testing and used thermal imaging to locate a hibernating colony in the walls.
Exclusion is not possible while bats are hibernating. We sealed the rest of the roofline in February, to ensure that as soon as they awakened the eviction could be completed. We also helped them close gaps and cracks in the interior walls to ensure any other bats who awakened early could not access the living space. We scheduled one-way eviction for April once the colony was active, and completed final closure a week later.
CASE STUDY: CORNWALL-ON-HUDSON, NY
A Three-Year Mouse Problem, Without Poison
A Cornwall-on-Hudson homeowner had mouse droppings showing up behind kitchen appliances and in cabinets every winter for three years. A previous pest control company had baited with rodenticide, which produced dead mice in the walls and eventually two dead squirrels from secondary exposure. This winter was particularly bad, and multiple mice had been spotted running through the living room at night.
We inspected the foundation, identified 22 separate entry points above ground, as well as tunneling down to access foundation entries below ground. We sealed all above ground areas and then dug a trench around the home and laid permanent barriers to safeguard the entry points below ground. Camera-monitored traps cleared the remaining interior population over ten days. No poison. Zero activity through the following winter.
